The purpose of the TOEFL® is to evaluate a non-native English speakers proficiency in theEnglish language. Almost one million students every year from 180 countries register totake the TOEFL®: the majority of universities and colleges in North America as well as inother English-speaking countries require official TOEFL® score reports for admission. Thetest is also used by institutions in other countries where English is the language ofinstruction. In addition, government agencies, scholarship programs and licensing /certification agencies use TOEFL® scores to evaluate English proficiency.
