In response to such changes we need a multifaceted, multi-agencyapproach based on strengthening individuals, families andcommunities, while at the same time improving the infrastructure andaccess to services. Midwives and midwifery services have a particularpart to play in this. We could go a long way to achieving improvementsin health and social outcomes by giving more people, particularlywomen and children, better life chances8. Midwives play a vital role ascore professionals in the multidisciplinary maternity team, working witha range of colleagues including obstetricians, GPs, health visitors/publichealth practitioners and maternity support workers/maternity careassistants.The quality of care that women, babies and families receive duringpregnancy, birth...
