It exam ines all com m on English prepositions, as well as less com m on ones. It is inten d ed for interm ediate-level stu d en ts w ho already have som e know led g e of E nglish prepositions, b u t w ho have difficulty in using them correctly. The language level assum ed th ro u g h o u t is m id-inter­ m ediate (pre-C am bridge First Certificate), b u t the book can also be used successfully by stu d en ts w ith a h ig h er language level. j Many stu d en ts of' E nglish m ake the m istake of trying to translate English prepositions into their ow n language. This is never successful because m ost prepositions express m ore th an one idea, and w hile one m eaning of the preposition m ay translate, th e o th ers often d o not. For exam ple, the preposition for can express the concepts of d u ratio n , exchange, benefit and suitability (am ong others), each concept rem aining separate. W o rk in g w ith E n g lish P rep o sitio n s treats prepositions as expressions of concept, not as purely gram m atical forms.
