Thus, enhancing civileducation will help the country develop towards market-based economic andinternational integration. Why, despite a complete curriculum for civil education atsecondary schools, do young people still lack knowledge and understanding about thestate’s structure and governance issues?Vietnamese young people have rare opportunities to contribute their ideas and maketheir voice heard. Even if they have a chance to do so, their opinions are not seriouslytaken into account. This, in turn, has discouraged them from being engaged ingovernance and making positive changes. Civil education improves students’knowledge, skills, and enthusiam, which are necesssary for the active and responsibleparticipation in society and governance. Therefore, an innovative way of teaching andlearning civil education will inspire students to learn more about this subject and growinto future active citizens.Through a grant with USAID’s Governance for Inclusive Growth Program, entitled:“Civic Education for Youth Program,” the Center for Sustainable Development Studies(CSDS) reviewed the current civic education curriculum in Vietnam’s high schools tosuggest improvements to delivering the curriculum. As a result, CSDS has develop amanual to guide teachers through the basic steps to design a civic education syllabuseither by theme or by project-based lectures.
